Empowering Young Artists and Audiences

At Blue Monkey Theater Company we believe that young audiences deserve diverse, empowering theater experiences, just like older audiences do. That means producing plays that are not only entertaining, but also challenging—and staging them in a smaller environment where everyone can enjoy an immersive,
up-close experience. It also means actively engaging underserved audiences, so that the magic of great theater is accessible to the entire community.

The Tale of the Blue Monkey

Wondering how Blue Monkey Theater Company got its name? We’re glad you asked. The name is inspired by The Tale of the Blue Monkey, a story about a young artist who sees things in a different way—and is not afraid to express this unique vision, no matter what other people might think. As originally told, the tale described a conversation between an adult and a child, but we believe it beautifully expresses a more universal truth, one that resonates with people of any age who are driven to reach beyond what is expected and push the boundaries of imagination.

“What are you doing?” the adult asks.

“I’m making a blue monkey,” the child replies.

“But blue is wrong for monkeys,” the adult says.

“Maybe,” the child says. “But it’s right for me.”

Blue is right for us, too!

Blue Monkey Policies

We’re all for being fearless, but we are also firmly committed to providing a safe, respectful environment in which young people can boldly explore theatrical craft while taking artistic risks. Blue Monkey Theater Company has adopted a non-discrimination policy and a clear code of conduct that our staff, contract employees and participants must adhere to. In addition, criminal background checks are conducted for teachers, directors and other adults in positions of authority.
